An Innovative Redevelopment Approach for West Hillhurst

The No. 264 project will create a new home for the Legion on Kensington Road. The vision doesn't end there.

Where is it located?

The No. 264 project starts with a new home for the Legion on Kensington Road. As the Legion explored options for how to redevelop, it decided to undertake a progressive partnership and redevelopment model. Through a partnership agreement with Truman, the Legion will move to Site 1 and into a new building that will be the home of this social organization. Once the work on Site 1 (and a new public road link) are complete and the Legion has moved in, the remainder of the parcel (Site 2) will be turned over to Truman to develop.

A New Home for the Legion: Site 1

The current Legion building is no longer fiscally sustainable and the aged facility no longer meet the needs of the organization. Site 1 will be where the new Legion home will be located. The vision for that home will be similar to its current facility’s form and function, but within a more efficient, flexible, and modernized space. This home will include a mix of market-rate office space to be owned by the Legion, to help create a long-term revenue stream to maintain their core member functions in the long-term. Although a members-focused facility, the Kensington Legion will continue to welcome the general public for on-site social, recreational, and cultural activities.

A New Centre of Activity for Kensington
Road: Site 2

Truman has developed an initial concept for Site 2. It envisions a mixed-use, mid-rise building that will provide new housing options and community amenities in West Hillhurst. The vision for Site 2 seeks to strike a balance between investing in a new modern home for the Legion and creating the scale of mixed-use mid-rise project that both affords that investment and is contextually appropriate for local community. This vision is also embracing The City of Calgary growth goals established for community “main streets” like Kensington Road.

The Royal canadian Legion north calgary Branch No.264

As a branch of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Kensington Legion has called West Hillhurst home since 1953. Although historically the Legion has been thought of as a place for older Veterans, the Kensington Legion is proud to also have a blossoming membership of all Canadians who support the principles of The Legion.

When it was founded, the Kensington Legion had only 61 active members. Today, it is one of Canada's largest branches, serving over 2,000 members ranging in age from 20 to 110.

Truman Development Corporation is an Alberta-based family -owned developer and builder, and within the next few years, Truman’s portfolio will include the development of over two thousand homes and over 1,200,000 square feet of commercial, retail and industrial space within the Calgary metropolitan area.

With more than 30 years of experience, Truman identifies and acquires properties primed for new residential development and utilizes industry leading methods to create the highest-quality neighbourhoods and homes. Truman also develops prime commercial and mixed-use properties within new and existing neighborhoods, fostering greater community vibrancy and vitality.
